Their latest
project presents a post 9/11, post apocalyptic view of life in America. As
the music begin in chaos and segues into the paranoid "Somebody's
watching you" you know instantly you are in for a ride. The Spies
touch America's raw and exposed nerves with songs about everything from
governmental excess to personal excess, unrequited love and yesterdays
romance. They do this with a tongue in cheek earnestness that is rarely
heard in this millennium's music. I really think that projects like this
name themselves.

Within
the first minute of the opening track, the creatively titled
"Perfect Monster Movie", the listener is sincerely put in
the pilot seat, operated by a powerhouse rock ensemble. The quintet
Spies of Life cruise into melodic bliss with the recent release of
Polar Plot, a mixture of monster jams, lighthearted jazz leaps, and
sweet pop rock cadences. What's most remarkable about the record is
the groups superior sense of instrumental prowess and witty lyrical
phrasings.
:Perfect Monster Movie" livens up the soul,
getting the record off to a electric start, "Unfinished
Song" sparks up a much lighter soul-jazz approach. A tune
which can be interpreted as an unfinished song about a
departed love. The words in "Dead Man" best reflect
a depiction of the infamous fab four "Nowhere Man"
concept: "the passing years have slowed his lightning hand/
even still, he's faster than most/ there will be a young one soon to
take his place." Spies of Life is presented here so naturally
as a veteran band, and their influx of musical knowledge and their
love for blues, soul and jazz shines out from beginning to end. One
has to agree that a band of this makeup, so cohesive and tight as a
unit, deserve much praise of releasing a record of astounding flair.
